Almost finished...

With the staining and the re-assembly complete, it's about time to call a temporary end to FiveWood. However, as nice as it's come out looking, Chris still had a lot that he wanted to accomplish with it that unfortunately never happened.

First, the case was made for a modding contest with a March 2008 deadline. Unfortunately, it seemed to miss the boat for that one. That's okay, though - you can't rush quality!

However, he also had some other substantial regrets, including not taking the time to implement his originally designed fibre-optic lighting system for the inside. He finally sucked up and bought a couple white CCFLs when he realized that his frame design did not have the room for a tidy fibre-optic lighting system.

Also in the original design was an idea for four "Barkley panels" instead of a single sliding door. Try as he might, Chris could not get the look down to a level he was satisfied with, so they ended up shelved. Along with them went the wooden fans, which simply would take too much time for no real gain (other than to say he'd done them). And hey, would you want to try balancing those suckers?

Last but not least, he had a copper column that was designed to route wires through on the inside (which would have looked gorgeous, we'll admit). Chris actually had the whole thing cut out, fitted and ready to roll - until his first test assembly, when he found out that the graphics cards interfered.

So there's the real happenings behind the scenes - and proof that not everything from even the most talented modders is mistake free.

A note of thanks...

Before the final shots, Chris had a couple notes of thanks (in his own words) for some helpful people in this project.
  • Anita - The Ark is complete Babe, but it won't float. (She told everybody I was building an Ark in the basement. I didn't tell her otherwise. Now that she sees what it is, she wishes I had built an ark!)
  • Allen - Father of several ideas, but especially Barkley Hatches. Good idea, just not ready for prime time.
  • Dale - Aside from your advice, thanks for handing me down a great drill press and band saw. What great additions!!
  • Ed - For sharing your woodworking expertise
  • Jerry - For sharing your woodworking expertise
  • John Lamb - For such great deals on lumber!! I've got enough to supply all my small project needs for the next 5 years!!
There you have it! Well, actually, look below...and then we're done!
